Scanography/scanograms

This technique is where, instead of using a standard camera, you use a scanner to create images. The good thing about this is that you can achieve incredibly high resolution images with great detail.

as you can see the images are very crisp and detailed due to how the scanner works. It works by taking lots of smaller images and stitching them together. I really like scanograms becasue in the right way you can get an image where it looks like the subject is trapped inside behind a layer of glass.

as seen in the image above where the subject looks trapped pressed up against the glass.

also with scanograms you can move something around to create this strange stretched out effect, works very well with hands and fingers. It can look very abnormal and alien.

Free Lensing

Free lensing is another technique in where you actually hold the lense infront of the camera instead of attatching it to the body. You can get some very interesting techniques doing this with tilt shift and light leaks.

I like some images done with free lensing becasue of the strange focus points and depths of field but it can create some interesting portraits (as shown) and can effectivaly highlight certain parts of the image where in focus.

 Here you can see a huge light leak into the lens where it isn't attatched to the body. I think this works great with this type of image because it adds a slight dreamy effect to the image.

Flipped Double Exposure

Flipped double exposure is a technique in where instead of taking two different images you use the same image just rotated of flipped and then overlay that image to create the double exposure.

 I really like these images because they look almost geometric in that they're perfectly mirrored or flipped and i just think it works really well with the double exposure.

Creating artificial joiners

I created this by using the marque tool and selecting boxes. I then create a new layer from this with Cmd+J (ctrl+J) and then using the move tool I slightly shift all the boxes to create a joiner looking image.





I then changed the brightness and contrast to make the squares stand out a little bit more. I darkened the squares slightly and took down the contrast a couple points.

Zoom Bursts

Zoom burst is setting the camera to a slower than usual shutter speed (1/4) and zooming in or out while the shutter is open creating quite strange vortex style images.

As you can see the zoom burst images do tend to work better with lights as they create this light stream (like light painting) and if you use a flash to freeze one subject then zoom in or out you can get some very abstract portraits and night shots.

Here are a couple examples of some images I did. The camera settings are on 1/4 f.11 with 400 iso, I did have the aperture high because i didn't want the images to appear too blurry.

Double Exposures.

Double exposure is the technique in where you combine two images together. You can either do this in some cameras (mainly film slr's) or post editing using photo manipulative applications such as photoshop. How you create a double exposure in photoshop is overlaying the two images and changing either the opacity or the layer style.

these are of portraits double exposed with landscapes or nature. I do like this because it can create some good textures on the portrait.

Double Exposures

How i plan to do this is take two images and overlay the images in photoshop either by using the opacity to make the image look transparent.
I took the images using my phone while i was out and about and got two quite contrasting images. One of someone in quite a modern building and one of a closeup of a tree.

How I combined them is put this image into photoshop and then overlaid the image of the branches into photoshop and chose the overlay layer style to create a double exposure image. I then added an adjustment layer to brighten the image slightly.

I do like this image because the two pictures really contrast each other subject wise but I do think it could be better if it was taken on a dslr with more control over the image settings. I'd like to try doing double exposures with slightly longer exposures to create a little motion blur.
